Charles Eames (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988) were an American married couple of industrial designers who made groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, industrial design, manufacturing, and the photographic arts. Working from their studio in California, they designed and produced some of the most iconic furniture pieces of the 20th century, including the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956), the Molded Plywood Chair, and fiberglass shell chairs. Their philosophy was to create the best for the most for the least—high-quality, beautiful, and functional design accessible to everyone. Beyond furniture, they created over 100 films, pioneered multimedia presentations, and designed exhibitions including the famous IBM Pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Their work revolutionized modern furniture design with innovative use of materials like molded plywood, fiberglass, plastic, and wire mesh, combined with industrial manufacturing processes. The Eames Office continues to preserve and promote their legacy, and their designs remain in production today by companies like Herman Miller and Vitra.
